NIKO BERGER
In Self-Defense
Washburn Gallery
2023
This show is a manifestation of my struggles trying to process and grieve the calamity of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. I do not claim to know the extent of their suffering and fear as someone who lives in the privilege and security of being a spectator. I merely hope that my work honors the lives lost and spreads awareness as to what is actually happening. Critics can call it political or radical, but if live broadcasted carpet-bombing of children doesn’t spur global outrage and action then what hope is left for our humanity as people?
In the 2 months following the escalation of conflict on October 7th, 2023, Israel dropped over 12,000 tons of TNT on Gaza: the same destructive force of the nuclear bomb used on Hiroshima. To this day they continue their genocidal campaign to bomb, starve and isolate the civilian population of Gaza. These atrocities are all done in the supposed name of “Self-Defense''.
Art is how I understand the world, but this show has left me baffled and emotionally bruised. I grieve for these people. I scream and cry for our humanity. What did these children do to deserve such trauma?
